Ghatasthapana begins on the fortnight of Ashwin, and the local timings vary with the tithi transitions. The day begins with setting up an earthen pot for Goddess Durga and worshipping her. After worshipping and taking blessings from the elders, there is prasad distribution. The day invites blessings for prosperity, family welfare, and victory.
The common observations on the day include cleaning and consecration, installing the Kalash, sowing Jamara, and often assembling Navapatrika. The kalash is usually made of clay, copper, or brass, decorated with mango leaves and coconut at the top.
Jamara refers to the sacred grass, usually Barley shoots or similar. It is a prominent practice in Nepal, and these shoots are braided into garlands, used during the festival.
Navapatrika refers to the set of 9 plants or branches representing the 9 avatars of the goddesses worshipped on each day of Navaratri.
The prasad or offering on the day includes fruits, sweets, yogurt, Flowers, etc. There are recitations of Aartis and strotas during the day.
